Early Childhood Development

From Understanding to Initiatives

Despite the wide array of theoretical frameworks and research in the discipline of child development, there is a dearth of guidance on how to implement that knowledge in real world settings. This book nicely bridges the gap between theory and practice and successfully presents the integration of psychology, sociology, education and public health in the area of early childhood development and care in the much needed cross cultural context of developing countries.

The book takes this interdisciplinary approach a step further, and provides a detailed account to conceptualize and implement community-based programs to achieve optimal early childhood development. The text has been developed on the premise that organized efforts to ensure a better future for our children are essential and require a basic understanding of the principles of a child’s growth and development, and the necessary skills to observe these scientifically. This volume will interest child development practitioners, advocates, students and caregivers who will find it furthers their understanding of the issues involved and assists in the promotion of their individual and collective endeavors.

Part A describes the domains of child development while highlighting the importance of the social environment. Part B emphasizes assessment and observation of different aspects of child development, and Part C provides guidelines to implement initiatives that can ensure a child’s survival, optimum growth and development at both neighborhood and community level. The final section focuses on the training needs on the basis of themes cross-referenced throughout the book.
